On December 8, the Confucius Classroom at 138th “Prof. Vassil Zlatarski” Middle School, under the Confucius Institute in Sofia, held an online calligraphy learning activity. Xiao Jianpeng, a renowned calligrapher from Mudan District, Heze City, Shandong Province, served as the main lecturer. More than 30 participants joined the event, including government-sponsored Chinese-language teachers, local teachers, and 8th-grade students.
Through the online platform, Xiao Jianpeng introduced the history of Chinese calligraphy and the characteristics of different script styles. He guided students to begin with basic strokes such as horizontal, vertical, left-falling, and dot, and to practice writing characters like “China,” “Bulgaria,” and “friendship,” symbolizing Sino-Bulgarian friendship. During the practical session, the students actively participated and showcased their own calligraphy works. At the end of the event, Xiao Jianpeng wrote the character “Fu” on the spot as a gift to the teachers and students, conveying his best wishes.
This calligraphy activity, combining explanation with hands-on practice, allowed Chinese language beginners to directly experience the structural beauty and cultural meaning of Chinese characters. It sparked their interest in the Chinese language and culture and resulted in positive feedback from the students.
