On January 19, the Confucius Classroom at Plovdiv University, under the Confucius Institute in Sofia, hosted a “Chinese Corner” calligraphy experience activity. The theme of the activity was “Ink in the Air, Beauty Everywhere” Calligraphy Experience. The Confucius Classroom’s Chinese language teachers and 15 first-year Bachelor’s students participated in the event.
At the event, students learned about the historical development and artistic connotations of Chinese calligraphy through videos. The teacher demonstrated and explained basic techniques such as sitting posture, how to hold the brush, and brush movement, and introduced the calligraphic philosophy that “handwriting reflects the person.” During the hands-on session, students practiced writing Chinese characters on xuan paper and copied the character “Fu” on red paper, with every brushstroke showing their concentration. The teacher stamped each student’s work with a traditional Chinese seal.
The “Chinese Corner” is one of the traditional projects of the Confucius Classroom at Plovdiv University. It aims to provide students with a platform to experience Chinese culture up close. The program is not only popular among Confucius Classroom students but has also attracted the attention and participation of students from other departments within the university.
